Secret Invasion Season 1 (2023) Trailer Review

Secret Invasion Season 1 (2023) Trailer Review

Over the last few years, Marvel Studios has released plenty of the Disney+ shows to a mixed level and the next show is Secret Invasion. The trailer for the show was just released and there was plenty to examine and look at so here is my biggest talking points from the trailer.

Nick Fury is back on Earth

After the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home it was revealed that Nick Fury was actually stationed in space and had been replaced by Talos. It made fans question just how long Fury has been away from Earth and what he has been up to. The trailer shows that he is back on Earth and clearly it is an important mission that could actually have big implications for the future of The MCU.

The Skrull are public with their attacks

The first shocking moment of the trailer sees Kingsley Ben-Adir's character who has been confirmed to be a Skrull, set off an explosion in the middle of Moscow. I suspect this will be an attempt to blame this attack on The US and potentially start a war between nations.

Martin Freeman is back as Everett Ross

We had previous confirmations by footage that certain characters would be returning but I think this is the first time we have seen Everett Ross played by Martin Freeman confirmed for the show. It is interesting as in his appearances so far he has had no connection to Nick Fury. I thought his appearance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever felt a bit out of place and unnecessary so I hope he actually gets some time to shine here.

Have the Skrull been working on Earth for a long time?

There is a shot in the trailer that shows Emilia Clarke's character come across a room of a lot of bodies. These seem to be bodies that the Skrull have overtook and use to their advantage. It makes you wonder how long they have been operating in The MCU as their first appearance was a long time ago in the timeline.

Is Olivia Coleman's character a Skrull?

This question could be valid for plenty of the characters showcased in this trailer as due to the shapeshifting ability of the Skrulls any character could be a Skrull. But one that comes across as really shady is Olivia Colemans character. She clearly has a history with Fury, but something just feels wrong about her and her allegiances.

The lack of Avengers is addressed

Over the years one of the biggest criticism of The MCU is the fact that they have world ending events in solo movies and shows when they have this group of heroes together. This trailer asks the question of where is The Avengers? Fury does make it clear that he wants to do this on his own but I think this was put in here to make it clear that The Avengers are still not really together after the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Is Kingsley Ben-Adir playing Super Skrull?

One shot from towards the end of the trailer shows Kingsley's Ben Adir using powers that I think looked slightly similar to Reed Richards powers. In the comics, Super Skrull was a character that had all the powers of the Fantastic 4. It would be strange considering we have never seen 3 members of that group for this character to be introduced here, but I think it does look like Super Skrull being here is a possibility.

Is this the last time we see Nick Fury?

The Trailer ends quite ominously with Fury saying it is one last fight. I think there is a chance that he is killed off here. Fury was one of the first big characters in the MCU but it does feel to me that potentially this would be an appropriate time to end his story in an effective way.

Overall

Overall, this trailer was really exciting. I love the tone of it, it seems to be taking itself seriously and leaning more into the spy and political vibes that could provide a unique addition to The MCU.
