Robert Downey Jr is Playing Doctor Doom in upcoming Avengers Films

Robert Downey Jr is Playing Doctor Doom in upcoming Avengers Films

So over the weekend was San Diego Comic Con and Marvel Studios decided to come to play and made some big reveals. But the biggest was easiest the news that Robert Downey Jr will be making his comeback to The MCU but this time he will be playing the villain Victor Von Doom and will be appearing in upcoming Avengers films. So with everybody having an opinion I thought I would give my opinion on the casting as well as some of the other Marvel news from Comic Con.

We are now getting Avengers: Doomsday & Avengers: Secret Wars

After the controversy involving Jonathan Majors, it seems like Kang's story has been stopped abruptly and that means that Avengers 5 will no longer be The Kang Dynasty and will change to Doomsday. This clearly sees the transition to Doom as the primary antagonist and lead into the end of The multiversal war in Secret Wars which is an interesting concept.

The Russos will be back to Direct Both Films

Joe and Anthony Russo are fantastic directors and I have loved every Marvel film they have directed which makes me really excited that they are returning to the franchise. We already saw them do a great job with two part Avengers films in Infinity War & Endgame so I have no doubt that they can handle this grand a scale and deliver really satisfying films.

Does this casting ruin the ending of Avengers: Endgame?

So obviously, Tony Stark died at the end of Endgame and people (including myself) didn't want to see him come back might cheapen the moment. But it is clear that Victor Von Doom will be a Tony Stark variant and not the same character, I don't think this exactly ruins the end of Endgame but only if this decision is handled with great care in these films.

Is this a waste of Doctor Doom?

For me, Doctor Doom is one of, if not the greatest villain in the Marvel universe and part of me does think he could be being wasted in telling a different story. It definitely seems like the Tony Stark connection will be a huge part of the character and that just doesn't fill me with much hope. There were so many amazing actors that could have played this role and I kind of feel it was a bit of a lazy choice.

Why wasn't Kang just recast?

One of the weirdest parts of this is why didn't they just recast Kang? We have seen in other MCU films that not all variants need to look the same meaning they could have cast a different actor to take over Jonathan Majors role as the villain. It seems the overall plans have changed drastically from Kang to Doom and I wonder if this is because Marvel Studios saw the issues that they were having and took this opportunity to change direction.

Will Doom have connection to The Fantastic Four?

Even though Doom is a huge level threat to The Avengers, he is mostly associated with The Fantastic Four who have been confirmed will appear in these films. I guess the question is will this version of Doom have that major connection with those characters and will that be quite distracting with Downey Jr playing the role.

Overall

Overall, despite the initial fan reaction, I am not a huge fan of the casting of Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom as I just feel like Kang should have been recast or another actor should have had the chance to play Doom. But The Russos coming back is fantastic and I still have faith that they can provide two great films.
