The Comey Rule Mini Series (2020) Review

The Comey Rule Mini Series (2020) Review

So this show made its way to The UK this week and I have now watched the mini series called The Comey Rule and here is my review for it. The premise of the show is based on true events and sees FBI Director James Comey try and navigate the political world where he comes against a certain President Of The United States.

Main Character

Jeff Daniels is such an interesting actor when you look at his TV and film history and he plays Comey here and he is fantastic. Now for a second forget about whether Comey is as nice in real life and focus on the real powerhouse of a performance that Daniels gives as Comey. He just has a real physical presence to him and he fits the role really well, he is a character we want to root for and you just see the difficulty he has. It is such an interesting role that he has on this show and you really feel that he is stuck in the middle of probably the craziest presidential race of all time and Daniels nails it in this role.

Supporting Character

Brendan Gleeson plays Donald Trump in this show and I thought he did really good job, though I saw a resemblance between him and Alec Baldwins depiction of the man on Saturday Night Live. He is absurd and over the top, but you also feel the disturbing chill that comes from him and again he has such a physical presence. Seeing him and Daniels come head to head is great and are the highlight of the show. This show is full of top quality actors who do great jobs, Holly Hunter, Michael Kelly, Scoot McNairy, Jonathan Banks and Brian d'Arcy James all have roles here and they all do great jobs and add some real legitimacy to this show and add so much acting quality to this show that it is the real highlight of this show.

Story

The story is interesting, seeing this man as the head of The FBI having to deal with the struggles of the political landscape provides a pretty captivating story. It shows how the FBI can get mixed with politics and how they really should stay away from each other and I thought the show did a really good job of showing that. But there are some issues with this shows story, I mean this show was marketed as Comey vs Trump but that doesn't happen till the third episode, the first two episodes are interesting enough but it just feels like long build-up till the main part of the show takes place. Also I can't help but to mention just how politically bias this show it, I am not saying Donald Trump is a good person at all, but it is incredibly one sided and shows its clear intentions and the fact it is out just before an election makes it feel more like an anti-Trump campaign ad as well as a show and that was too much for me.

Script

The script is fine here, there are some really great moments of dialogue, mainly from Daniels who delivers some great speeches, it feels raw and real which is really good. But there is also plenty going on and sometimes it doesn't feel like the balance is always there, it focuses on so many people and doesn't always give you enough to be invested in certain story arcs.

Style

The style is slower paced, but it managed to keep me invested with the great acting and the good direction. Seeing the behind the scenes of The FBI dealing with these different scenarios is the most interesting part and actually when Trump comes in, it is more intense but maybe not as interesting. Though I feel like the show maybe ends an episode too early, it kind of skips over its ending and it could have showed some interesting parts of storytelling that would have been unique from the rest of the show.

Overall

Overall, this is a good series that is really well acted. But there are clear issues, mainly a clear political agenda but that shouldn't take away from the stellar acting and if you like well acted well directed shows then this could be one for you to watch.

Rating - 7/10
