First Impressions - Pennyworth Season 2

First Impressions - Pennyworth Season 2

After binging the first season over the last few days, I have now sat down and watched the first episode of season 2 of Pennyworth and here are my first impressions of hopefully an exciting second season of the show.

A year has passed since the season 1 finale

The finale for the first season was fantastic and set up a really interesting fallout for the characters. However, the show chooses to pick up a year down the line and show that The Raven Society who are now called The Raven Union have basically taken over England out of pretty much nowhere and shows the country under Marshall law. Personally I would have preferred the show to pick up closer to the finale and really show how The Raven Society expanded so much and took over.

Alfred is looking to escape England

Even though he saved The Queen in the finale, Alfred seems to be a hunted man still. In this episode he is looking to gain money to book passage to America, could this be the way the show sets up Alfred in the US with the Waynes? I think eventually the show will move out of The UK and it seems the seeds have been sowed for that.

The show isn't committed to the Wayne's - at least not yet.

With Thomas Wayne and Martha Kane both on the show it seemed logical for the two to be paired together as a couple like they traditionally are in DC. After the end of Season 1 it seemed like they were racing towards that idea, but this episode made it clear that isn't happening. Thomas revealed to Martha that he was engaged, thus ending their romantic relationship for now, with this being a Batman prequel show you have to feel they will get there, it is just the show taking its time.

Alfred is avoiding The Queen

After the events of the first season it seemed like Alfred was going to be close to The Queen, but this season made it clear that they haven't exactly been in touch most and Alfred is clearly ignoring her. You can't imagine it staying that way and with The Raven Union closing in it feels like they will have to become allies rather soon.

What is Beth Sykes up to?

Beth Sykes played by Paloma Faith was a character I didn't really care for in the first season but it seems her motivation is going to be more ambiguous this season. She is a captain of The Raven Union but clearly isn't a big fan of all of the policies but it seems she isn't going to be as loyal this season. I do wonder whether she will become a more heroic character but it is unlikely given the things she has done.

Are The Raven Union building Venom?

It seems like The Raven Union are trying to build some sort of chemical weapon called Stormcloud. Now I am a bit of theorist and I know Pennyworth isn't exactly the most comic book heavy show but could this actually be the production of the DC drug Venom. I'm not saying the show is going to suddenly introduce Bane but it seems possible that The Raven Union would want to create super soldiers and why not use something from the comics.

Overall

Overall, this is once again a fun episode of Pennyworth, the story seems to be developing in an interesting way and I hope it keeps the quality up for the other 9 episodes.
