I Am Not Okay With This Season 1 (2020) Review

I Am Not Okay With This Season 1 (2020) Review

I heard about this series and the premise sounded really interesting to me so I decided to give I Am Not Okay With This's First season a watch and this is my review of the show. The premise of the season sees a teenage girl have to deal with not fitting in to her high school environment, while also finding out she has Telekentic Super Powers.

Main Character

Sophia Lillis plays Sydney on this show and she is fantastic on the show, she is a very interesting character and you grow to really care about her character. in the show. She has a fascinating arc on the show and as the show goes on you see her character get more and more confident and it is really nice to see her this way. But also there is plenty of damage and darkness to her performance that makes her a really well rounded character that really carries this show.

Supporting Characters

Wyatt Oleff plays Stanley on this show and I really liked his character, the chemistry between him and lillis is really good on the show, their friendship is a really nice part of the show and you are really rooting for them to succeed as friends. Sophia Bryant plays Dina and also the friendship she has with Sydney is a huge part of the show, the friendship is a bit of a change up for shows like this and it works as you do buy that they are really true friends. Kathleen Rose Perkins as Sydneys Mum & Richard Ellis as Dina's boyfriend Brad and they both do good jobs in their roles even though they are quite basic characters thye do well in their jobs on the show.

Story

The story has plenty of cogs into it and there are some very interesting things, the stuff to do with the superpowers gains more traction later on in the season and it is really interesting as more and more things get revealed. Also there are some pretty groundbreaking things shown on this show that could be talked about in the teen community and I felt like it was important. Also the ending of the season is great and does a brilliant job in getting you excited for a potential future season. However, the one thing I will say about this show is that the story is quite predictable and there are some side plots that are just not as interesting and I felt like they could have been cut in order to focus on the better stories a bit more.

Script

The script of this show is great, the dialogue feels very real and natural for teens, my biggest issue with characters of this age is that they don't talk like there age and keep things clean, these characters feel very real and interesting. The humour made me really laugh and also when there was some drama needed it really worked and the blend of humour and drama did a great job of making this show feel very unique.

Style

The style of this show is really interesting, even though it is clearly set in present day it is filmed to make it look like a retro show and I really liked the unique feeling to the show. Also as mentioned this films tone is great and the mix of humour and drama is great, also there is some suprising darker scenes that really did a great job. Also this show has only 7 episodes and they are like 25 minutes each but I felt like that was a perfect length for this show and I hope if there is a second season they continue this length of the show.

Overall

Overall I thought this was a fantastic show and a show that the majority of people will enjoy and I think this show has a chance to be even better in future seasons.

Rating - 9/10
