Hamilton (2020) Review

Hamilton (2020) Review

So I originally wasn't going to watch or review Hamilton, but this broadway production has taken over the world so I sat down with my mum and watched the 2 hour 40 film of the production and here is my review for it. The premise of the film shows the story of Alexander Hamilton the forgotten Founding Father starting from his humble beginnings all the way to his death.

Main Character

Lin-Manuel Miranda plays Hamilton here and he is superb. This man is really talented, not only did he star here but he wrote all the songs, his singing voice is really unique and really works here. He brings plenty of emotion to his role, I really cared about him and thought he gave a truly brilliant dramatic performance. But he also was pretty funny here with some good comedic lines, what was also great is that Hamilton is a really interesting character, he isn't this generic good guy, he has plenty of flaws and he is portrayed as a normal guy which helps the show.

Supporting Cast

I must stress everybody here is truly fantastic, even the background performers are great but here are the ones that stood out to me. Leslie Odom Jnr plays Aaron Burr the seemingly antagonist here and I thought this guy really shined, the fact his character is called Aaron like me has nothing to do with it. He has a great singing voice and again like Hamilton the character is really multi layered and a fascinating part of this production. Phillipa Soo plays Eliza Hamilton and I really saw her as the heart of this production, her relationship with Hamilton is well done and you come out of this film wanting to learn more about her and see the things that she achieved in her own right. Chris Jackson playing George Washington for me was a huge presence on the stage he was a larger then life character and he did a great job in the role. A special shoutout to Jonathan Grogg who plays King George, he isn't in the production much but he was a showstealer for me making me laugh the hardest here.

Story

The story is really interesting, we have all heard of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson but I am not sure too many have heard of Alexander Hamilton so it was great learning about this historical figure. I mean I am not sure exactly how much was accurate but it was a really interesting story, and with this being a musical using song to tell this story really worked. It made it more fun and enjoyable to study but also managed to make the dramatic scenes feel really impactful.

Script

Yes, pretty much all of the dialogue here is sung, which is impressive in its own right. But for me this was a really well written film. As mentioned above the drama really worked for me and the sprinkling of humour in there just made the story and characters even more interesting.

Style

The style of the way they filmed this production is fantastic, it feels truly epic in its production and the way it is presented. All the songs are fantastically performed and I loved the different styles of music that was here, there is a mix of rap, RNB and dramatic musical and the blend suprisingly works really well. But with this production this film is a bit long, and I get that it is a muscial so it should be long but I felt like I was pretty tired by the end of the film.

Overall

Overall, this is a truly fantastic production that all musical fans will love. But honestly, I think people who aren't a Musical fan can love it too, as I am not a Musical fan and I truly loved this film and would reccommend it to everybody.

Rating - 9/10
